CADMIUM II and NOVA 5

Okay, let's go over a couple more meaning to some of my songs :)

CADMIUM II - Another one with a 'II' in it...but not because it had another part before...  A Cadmium II radiation leak is what killed the Red Dwarf crew.   ...I still wonder why a chicken soup dispenser repair man was sent to repair the drive plate that caused the accident... ;)

CADMIUM II is one of my favorites...  it's simple...but nice to listen to.  My girlfriend has a wicked vision for a music video to it....which I would love to see happen.

NOVA 5 -  This was the name of the spacecraft that the Red Dwarf crew rescued KRYTEN from in the first episode of series 2.

Not a hugely complicated musical piece...just something to change the mood a little.  I had arranged it specifically to have some rap vocals put over it....but it hasn't happened yet...so it remains instrumental.   Just a couple of loops i found..put over some beats..

OTRAZONE PT II

OTRAZONE - the circuit corrupting drug for mechanoids....

Watch RED DWARF  series 7 - Beyond a joke -

This new tune is the first of the new ones which will be on album 2...whenever that may be..  Not so much a dirty dubstep offering...but more of  a spaced out vibe.. with big melodies and synths throughout.
This one was a bit tricky to do..as the sections just weren't flowing into each other well enough..   I went back to the drawing board about 3 times on this little smegger... I think it turned out okay in the end tho :)

I put it together to go through the stages of what the OTRAZONE trip might be like... different sections of trancey and trippy sounds with a hard, straight dubstep beat on the main sections.

There is a II in the title....   OTRAZONE was one of the first dubstep tunes I made a while back...but it wasn't quite up to par with my more recent ones...so it's hidden away... but OTRAZONE II will live on in it's place ;)

Hey hey!! :)

So the first DLV album is just about ready to put out. It will have 12 tracks on it...and will be entitled '3 MILLION YEARS FROM EARTH'.   Originally I was going to do 2 e.ps...but on further thought...I figured it'd be easier to just put it all on the one presentation.

I'M GOING TO EAT YOU LITTLE FISHIES..., 3 MILLION YEARS FROM EARTH... + Sampling voices...

I have just finished another 2 songs which are going to be on the 2nd DLV e.p.
'I'M GOING TO EAT YOU LITTLE FISHIES...' a Dancier tune which is similar in style to 'I would go with Betty...'.   I was pleasantly surprised and happy to hear that a top DJ in Hollywood had taken a liking to that song. He had already played 'IWGWB' at a club there...so I assume he's spun this one too.

'3 MILLION YEARS FROM EARTH' is the second song that I've used a sample from 'Red Dwarf' on. I put a mic in front of the tv...and sampled those words...which were spoken by 'Holly' (Norman Lovett) on the intros to early Red Dwarf episodes.   On 'MR. FLIBBLE' I sampled 'Rimmer' (Chris Barrie) saying the words 'MR FLIBBLE IS VERY CROSS!...YOU SHOULDN'T HAVE RUN AWAY FROM HIM...'   ...now I don't know if I'm legally allowed to do this....but surely it's for a good cause... and if anything, I'm promoting them too.. so it can't be a bad thing ;)   I have sent mr Lovett a message....so I'll wait to see what he says...and I'll update you on here if he replies.

HOLLY...

...well I just invited Norman Lovett to join the DLV Facebook page...I wonder if he'll like it....
I can quite safely say that it isn't his kind of music....but it'd be more than cool to have him, the original Holly from Red Dwarf as a fan...

<UPDATE>

Much to my surprise...I now have THE original HOLLY as a fan of the DR LANDSTROM's VIRUS page.. Happy and honoured...I most certainly am :)

I would go with betty...but I'd be thinkin' of Wilma... BBC Introducing + the Reverbnation Dubstep chart

After only really setting out to make some Dubstep music,,,I wanted to make a tune that had a bit more of a driving beat...something that would sound good in a car...something with more of a dancey vibe to it...so I began to work...
I found a nice sample to work off...and the song just seemed to flow for a while...until I hit a brick wall with the beats.  On a Dubstep track, I often take 2 different beats and layer them up to create a new and fuller beat.. but this wasn't working the same way with trance drums...so getting them to sound decent was a bit of a mission.
Anyway...when the instrumental side was done...I thought it might be fun to add some vocals...so I did.  I liked 'em at the time....but the version you'll hear on my Reverbnation page has part of the vocals removed... only the 'oooh's are left in the choruses.   I called the song 'I WOULD GO WITH BETTY...BUT I'D BE THINKING OF WILMA...'  and it turned out to be quite popular with whoever listened to it.
I sent that song and 'MILLENIUM OXIDE' off to BBC INTRODUCING..with little hope that they'd even listen to it at all after reading something like 'we will listen to your song within 6 months'... I didn't sit tight...
Shortly after this, I went on holiday...and when I came back...I typed in DR LANDSTROM'S VIRUS into Google...and the name came up on a BBC website... I was like 'what the hell??'  I checked it out and there it was....'I would go with Betty...' had been played on BBC radio!!...a month ago!!  I was amazed....but also wondered why I hadn't been told it was gonna be played. ...so I checked my e-mails....and there in the junk folder were 3 emails from the BBC... the first saying that the song had been listened to... the second...saying that it was gonna be played on the radio show...and the third...saying that it had been broadcast.  I couldn't believe I'd missed my own song being played...  The podcast for that particular show had already run out of time...so I couldn't get a copy... but at least it happened...that's the main thing :)    Okay...having a song played on the radio may not be a huge deal to some... but to this guy from a lil' ass village in South Wales...it was a big deal.
I think the name of the track had a lot to do with it being listened to in the first place...after all...it IS probably the best known quote from Red Dwarf.
Shortly after this, I used the hype of the radio show and made a couple of new tracks 'THE DOVE PROGRAM' and 'ORANGE WHIRLY THING IN SPACE' and pushed the DR LANDSTROM'S VIRUS Reverbnation page as hard as I could...and within a couple of weeks...I had hit number one in the regional dubstep chart...and number 4 in the country.   I set my region to 'SPACE' as I just thought it'd suit the music better than Swansea...or Ammanford Wales... but doing this...my region now seemed to be set to somewhere in England...as I was now in a regional chart with dubstep artists from London and its surrounding areas....which I thought to be fuckin' amazing when I sat above them all on the chart.  As questionable as those charts are...I still got to the top of it...legitimately too.  There is only one artist on the dubstep chart for swansea...so that wouldn't have been a challenge... so to climb from number 34 to number 1 in a totally different region...was a proud moment for me.  ...but I might switch my region over to Swansea later...so I can rep my own country ;)

So I have just finished the follow up to 'I would go with Betty...'  It's called 'I'M GOING TO EAT YOU LITTLE FISHIES'  which is what CAT sings whenever he's about to eat some...err......fishies...
I wanted to do something that had the same kinda vibe as the other one... but it turned out to be quite difficult to make.    I firmly believe that Dubstep is far easier to make than Trance or Dance music...but I will continue to try to make them both...

Inspiration for DLV...

If you have listened or seen anything on the net about DLV's music...you may have noticed that both the name and the majority of the song titles are references to and from Red Dwarf..the popular British comedy which was first aired in 1988.   ...my favorite t.v show of all time...

In the episode 'Quarantine' from Series V..we hear about Dr. Hildegarde Lanstrom and her break-thru discoveries involving viruses.  She had found that there were not only negative viruses...but positive ones too.  Here's the section from the script:

LISTER: Anything?
KRYTEN: Quite extraordinary. Lanstrom postulated that there are two
kinds of virus. Positive and negative. The negative we already know
  about.
LISTER: Yeah, like the flu, rabies, that kind of stuff.
KRYTEN: But she also believed that there are _positive_ viral strains
which actually make human beings feel better.
CAT: Such as?
KRYTEN: Well, at a very basic level she predicted a kind of "reverse flu"
-- a strain of virus which promotes an unaccountable feeling of well-
  being and happiness.
LISTER: That's happened to me! Me life's been turned to complete and
utter crud, and I've woken up in the morning feeling good for no
  apparent reason!
KRYTEN: The chances are, sir, that on those occasions you had unwittingly
contracted Lanstrom's virus. According to her notes, twentieth-century
DJs suffered from it all the time.
CAT: So what's in the tubes?
KRYTEN: Lanstrom claims to have isolated several strains of positive
  virus: inspiration, charisma, sexual magnetism--
CAT: Sexual magnetism is a virus? Then get me to a hospital, I'm a
  terminal case!

While CAT and KRYTEN aren't looking, LISTER puts that tube in an inside
pocket.

KRYTEN: This one is the most intriguing of all. According to her notes,
this is the viral strain Felicitus Populi, commonly known as "luck."
LISTER: (Disbelieving) Luck is a virus?
KRYTEN: A positive virus which most humans contract at some point in
their lives for very short periods. And here it is: Lady Luck in
liquid form. Want to try some?
LISTER: Is it safe?
KRYTEN: Absolutely harmless. Even so, this is a minute dose and will
  only last about three minutes.

LISTER shrugs, then holds his dreadlocks and collar out of the way as
KRYTEN injects him.

KRYTEN: Now, I want you to pick out all the aces from this pack of cards.
LISTER: Shuffle them?
KRYTEN: Mmm hmm.

LISTER shuffles the deck, then picks all the aces. As he does so, KRYTEN
calls out the odds against his just-completed act.

KRYTEN: 13 to 1. 221 to 1. 5525 to 1. 270725 to 1!

KRYTEN, inspired, decides on a yet more challenging experiment.

KRYTEN: Sir, I want you to throw this dart over here into that bulls eye
behind you using your left hand, without looking.
LISTER: What, using my left hand? Into the Bulls-eye? Without looking?
  No chance.
KRYTEN: Trust me, sir.

LISTER, still shaking his head, takes up throwing position.

CAT: You ready?

LISTER throws the dart. There is a dull thunk.

KRYTEN: Ahh. I think that indicates the luck virus has worn off.

KRYTEN turns round and we see the dart is embedded into the back of his
head.

...so this is where the name comes from. The script says LANSTROM with no 'D' whereas DLV spells it as LANDSTROM.

A positive virus....although it's from a fictional show....the thought is still very interesting...and would explain a lot of things if it were to be a true thing..  So DLV is intended to be your 'positive virus'...your Dubstep/Dance feeling of well being....for no reason at all... ;)
